We don't expect any experience in vacuum technology.

We encounter lots of things we’ve never seen before, which makes the job really exciting.

The typical turbomolecular pump repair process involves dismantling, cleaning, assessing the pump, and, if necessary, preparing a cost estimate. Once the estimate has been approved, the pump is repaired using the necessary spare parts. But no two days are ever the same here.

Recently, we received an enquiry about a turbomolecular pump that we’d never worked on before. However, we were already familiar with many similar pumps from the same manufacturer. The customer then sent us a photo showing the rating plate and manufacturer details, along with all the other information we needed. Based on what we could see and our previous experience, we were able to say, “Yes, go ahead and send it in. We can repair that.” It was simply a case of recognising that it was a pump we could handle based on our existing expertise. Es wird wirklich nie langweilig. Some experience with electrical work would be great, but we’re also more than happy to teach someone who’s keen to learn everything they need to know.

Take the control units of a turbomolecular pump, for example. They contain five circuit boards, and I need to work out from the outside which board is most likely to be faulty. I then replace that board. Even colleagues without formal electrical qualifications carry out this kind of work here. For example, if you switch on a turbomolecular pump controller and nothing happens, an experienced technician will already know: “Aha, the power supply board must be faulty.” All we really need is a logical understanding of what should happen, when and where, and how the different components work together.

Another example: if a vacuum gauge doesn’t switch on at all, the power supply is probably faulty. However, because we don’t know exactly what the problem is, tracking it down can be much more difficult. In principle, this is the kind of fault that someone who’s used to fixing electrical problems at home might also be able to identify. The difference between the two examples is that, in the first case, I know exactly which replacement part to fit. In the second, I have to find the fault myself and first work out which component is the switched-mode power supply, for example. That requires a little more basic knowledge of electrical systems.

When one technician talks to another, the conversation is much more productive than when, for example, a salesperson discusses technical matters with a buyer who doesn’t specialise in that area.

When repairing an older pump, spare parts can often be very expensive, or we may need to come up with a bespoke solution. In these cases, we need to get in touch with the customer and work together to find a solution that keeps costs as low as possible while satisfying both sides. I think it’s a real advantage when technicians can speak directly to customers. If you get the right person on the phone, it can make a huge difference. That’s why some initial experience in dealing with customers, or at least a willingness to communicate with them, is important to us.

Your key responsibilities

Carrying out all tasks involved in the repair of turbomolecular pumps, including:

  • Inspection and dismantling

  • Assessment and fault analysis

  • Cleaning and decontamination

  • Repair and refurbishment

  • Testing and final inspection

Key equipment and components:

  • Turbomolecular pumps

  • Leak detectors

  • Vacuum gauge heads

  • Controllers and other electronic equipment

Additional responsibilities:

  • Recording parts used and time spent against the relevant job in the ERP system

  • Liaising with customers on technical matters relating to complaints, warranty claims and fault diagnosis

  • Preparing repair reports

Your profile

  • Completed technical training in electronics, mechatronics, precision engineering (with basic electrical knowledge) or a comparable field

  • Experience in the repair and maintenance of vacuum technology, turbomolecular pumps or related equipment would be an advantage, but is not essential

  • Knowledge of analysing, diagnosing and troubleshooting electronic and mechanical systems

  • Experience using measuring and testing equipment

  • Confident use of ERP systems to record working hours and materials used

  • Some experience in dealing with customers would be an advantage

  • An interest in and willingness to learn about future technologies

  • Fluent German (C2) and at least upper-intermediate English (B2)

  • Driving licence (Category B)

That’s exactly what we’re looking for. We regularly have older turbomolecular pump controllers in our workshop that need components such as transistors or capacitors replacing.
